I'd rather have some retro style while I struggle to keep up with traffic and spew toxic fumes into the cabins of the unlucky ones stuck behind me.

The E36 is not good looking in either sense. It isn't retro enough (E30), and it isn't modern enough (E46). And sure it's got some performance with the 2.5 but that's not what makes it a good beater is it?
